DAVID C. HENNEN, ARCHITECT
Educational & Athletic Facilities
I have experience designing and delivering a variety of educational buildings.
The majority of my work has been in higher education and preschool buildings.
Completed in 2021 and opened in 2022 as the FIRST college of chiropractic medicine in Kentucky, this 40,700 square-foot, 2-story project was accomplished via a design-build collaboration with Hilpp Construction, Inc. By using a pre-engineered metal building structural system, in combination with a masonry/brick veneer and custom steel canopy structures, this handsome and functional classroom, office and gathering space was acheived for a fraction of the cost for comparable university buildings.

Completed in 2019, this 22,500 square-foot wellness center is located in the heart of the main campus of Campbellsville University. It includes a large basketball court (with accommodation for 2 practice courts), locker rooms, 2 large exercise rooms, a weight room, offices, exercise machines facing exterior windows, and a relaxing coffee/smoothie bar that is popular with students (regardless of whether or not they are there to work out). This project was accomplished via a design-build collaboration with Hilpp Construction, Inc. By using a pre-engineered metal building structural system, in combination with masonry/brick veneer accents and custom steel canopy structures, this handsome facility was built for a fraction of the cost of comparable university buildings. Pro-Services Construction, Inc. provided design-build services for the smoothie bar buildout.

Created from a re-purposed steel industrial retail building (most recently used as a hardware store), this project made the best use of dark basement areas for media-friendly classrooms while using the lofty interiors of the main level for broadcast studios. The main level also features the radio broadcast booth with a window into the main lobby, offices, toilets, a lounge, and other small recording studios accessible from the main corridor. A new 1,000 square-foot addition on two levels provides an elevator connecting the floors and a prominent exterior volume and canopy, which welcome students and the public to the entrance. This project was completed with Pro-Services Construction, Inc.

Designed to fit a tight site and a tight budget, this 9,500 square-foot child care facility (plus drop-off canopy) was completed in 2020 for just under $1.4 million. The Head Start center includes four classrooms for 2 to 4-year-olds, an infant/toddler room, offices, ample storage with outside access, a commercial kitchen, and a cafeteria/multi-use space that can be divided by an accordion partition as needed. Built by Isaac Tatum Construction, Inc., it incorporates a pre-engineered metal building structural system to provide these amenities for a fraction of the cost of comparable child care buildings.
